Central Conference of American Rabbis calls upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dismiss Shas MK David Azoulay from the Cabinet
July 9, 2015
The Central Conference of American Rabbis calls upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dismiss Shas MK David Azoulay from the Cabinet and from his post as Israel's Religious Affairs Minister, after Azoulay disparaged Reform Jews, Reform Judaism, and indeed all Jews who do not adhere to ultra-Orthodox (Hareidi) Judaism.
Minister Azoulay first said that neither we nor the members of our communities are Jews at all. His clarification, while plausible, did not improve matters, as he denigrated Judaism as it is practiced by the vast majority of Jews worldwide.
Minister Azoulay is entitled to his private beliefs. However, as a minister in the government of all Israel, he has an obligation to support the religious practice of all Israelis. Having laid his bias bare, Minister Azoulay cannot be expected to respond to Israelis' diverse religious needs fairly.
CCAR members work hard every day to draw our communities ever closer to Torah and to the Jewish State we love. Words like Minister Azoulay's can only serve to alienate members of the communities we serve from Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu is obligated to make good on his welcome, repeated statements that Israel is the home of all Jews, requiring him to dismiss a minister whose words make clear that he serves only a minority of the Jewish people.
