169. Meditation Groups and

Judaism

QUESTION: Several meditation groups have been formed in

the community. Those who have participated say that this is not a religion but simply a way of

relaxing tensions and learning to cope with personal problems. Is there a conflict between the

meditation groups and Judaism?ANSWER: There is a wide variety of such groups

currently in existence in the United States. Some of them adhere to beliefs and practices which

are not compatible with Judaism. This would be true of Hare Krishna, Scientology and groups

which have become cults around a specific leader who has frequently been elevated above the

status of a normal human being. We would consider such groups as close to idolatry and

dangerous to Judaism. A group which, however, meets solely for the purpose of

meditation and solving of personal problems would not be very different from group psychology

which often resorts to this method in order to resolve certain kinds of problems. We would, of

course, be concerned that there is absolutely no theological activity which might be in conflict

with Judaism. There would be nothing wrong with participating in such a group as long as the

individuals attending are aware that sometimes matters begin in this fashion and then lead down

the path of cults.September 1983
