244. Gift Shop and General Merchandise

QUESTION: Our Sisterhood has managed a successful gift shop for many years. It has dealt primarily in Judaica but in an effort to increase revenue and assist special synagogue projects, has expanded its merchandise. Some have complained and felt that this was an improper way to raise funds for the Temple. Are they correct? (Sally Rosenzweig, Los Angeles CA)ANSWER: Synagogues have used many different methods to raise funds for the congregation. It has always been considered obligatory for everyone in the community to support the synagogue as was done with the ancient Temple (Ex 30.11 ff; W. Jacob Contemprary American Reform Responsa # 139, 151). We have avoided methods which were distasteful or interrupted the service like the sale of Torah honors (Ibid 150) and gambling (Ibid 160). The expansion of the gift shop into new directions seems like an appropriate way of helping the synagogue. We should be careful that this effort remains in perspective; I have seen gift shops which are too obtrusive and commercialize the synagogue. There are also taxation issues which must be addressed by the appropriate individuals. This method of fund raising is appropriate and should be helpful to the congregation.April 1989
